WORKING IN MACKAY
Mackay has a vigorous economy that is based on its natural resources. A well established economy provides a strong foundation for regional industry expansion and diversification. Principal industries are mining, agribusiness, engineering services, construction, marine and tourism. The mining industry produces over 35 percent of the region's output, with coal the predominant resource.
A steady population growth has permitted the development and expansion of support services and infrastructure. Employment in the Mackay hinterland is significantly higher than for Queensland as a whole. Vigorous growth and the potential increase in mining activity underpin good employment prospects across the region. Prospects for investment are abundant, as the region's industries exploit technological advancement and emerging industry opportunities to strengthen, diversify and grow.
The region offers a memorable range of tourism experiences from beautiful beaches to lush rainforests, extensive wetlands, idyllic islands and rolling hinterland. Visitors have the opportunity to view wildlife as diverse as platypus in their natural river habitat to the vast marine life of the Great Barrier Reef, with more than two-thirds of all visitors accessing the reef here.
