The aim of the Aged Care Access Initiative (ACAI), which has replaced the GP Panels, is to enable low care residents of Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs) to have improved access to GPs and to allied health services. There are two components, one is an incentive payment for GPs to visit the residents, and the second component relates to provision of allied health services which are not covered by Medicare or by other government funding programs.
A needs assessment of allied health services, undertaken in Mackay and district, highlighted a widespread need for a range of allied health services for residents of local RACFs. The funding will be used for direct allied health service provision for residents and may be for individual services or for group services.
Australia-wide the Aged Care Access Initiative is expected to support an additional 260,000 GP consultations and provide approximately 150,000 allied health services in residential aged care facilities during a four year period.

The RACGP Silver Book is designed to give guidance to general practitioners who work with people living in residential aged care. The guide is also useful for nurses, other health professionals and staff working in aged care facilities. The RACGP Silver Book highlights general principles of care and aims to increase understanding and awareness of care requirements.
